Pinnacle Knob.
About 8+ miles. Hike
north on Bartram Trail into a dense mountain laurel and rhododendron
forest. At 2.2 miles visit Martin Creek
Falls, continue another
1.7 miles to Courthouse Gap and then take the 0.5 mile side trail to
Pinnacle Knob for a spectacular rocky vista.
Option for after hike refreshment on the porch of Rumor Haz-It.

NEW HIKE: Fall Color Hike: 10.8 miles from Wayah Bald
to Franklin, NC
outskirts on the Bartram Trail.
Start high on 5342’ Wayah Bald’s old observation tower with commanding
view from the Smokies to
Albert
Mountain.
Overall the hike is downhill, but some up-and-down in between
will give you a workout. Conclude
just past a lovely waterfall at the trailhead on Franklin’s outskirts. Hike
paced at 2+ mph.

Wildlife Management Area. 4.7 miles and 800 foot elevation change. The
Yellow Mountain Trail to the top, then the Shope Gap Trail to the Duncan
Ridge Road, follow the road to the Mill Shoal Creek Trail which will
take us back to the Campground. Relax with your feet in the beautiful
creek at the end of the hike.

that along with Bell
Mountain dominates the
skyline from Hiawassee and Hayesville. Up close views of Bell Mountain,
pass old hunter’s cabin and great views of Lake Chatuge.

the second highest point in GA.
The trail passes Indian Grave Gap (3113 ft), a fabulous hillside
of Galax, the “cheese factory” turnoff, a viewpoint just before Tray Mt.

We will start hiking from Watson Gap, enter the Cohutta
Wilderness on the BMT, then use the Hemp Top and Jack’s River trails to
complete a circle and return over a 2.6 repeat of the BMT to Watson Gap
again. About 8.3 miles.

NEW HIKE: From Sandy Gap
to Unicoi Gap on the Benton MacKaye Trail.
It is
an 8.3 mile section, with a beautiful ridgeline walk along the NC/TN
state line, with added attractions of seeing an old engraved stone
marker on the ridge marking the state line, and “old” Doc Watson’s TB
sanatorium, in ruins, with rock walls over 3 stories high still
standing, and ending at the historic Unicoi Gap in TN.

Deep Gap to Sassafras
Gap on the AT.
9+ miles. Just about our last chance to visit the Deep Gap
area until March as the FS usually closes this road from Jan. through
March. We start on the AT
and head South to Muskrat Shelter area, then on for a visit to Ravenrock
Cliff, stop and explore an aircraft crash site, then back on the AT for
scenic views of Lake Chatuge and on to Sassafras Gap.
Return to our cars the same way except near the end we take the
“old AT.” Carpool $5.00.
